Corn dogs
My kids fondness for corn dogs started at the Minnesota state fair. And now they try and get it for dinner if they find it on the menu at a restaurant. I wanted to see if I could make them at home and if they would be any good. I was happy with how they turned out and the kids liked it too.
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1 cup yellow corn meal
1 egg
3/4-1 cup milk
1/4 honey
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 tablespoon baking powder
1 pack hotdogs, I used Hebrew National.
Combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and corn meal together. Add the milk, honey and beaten egg and to the dry and mix well. Dredge the hot dogs in flour till well coated. This will help the batter adhere to the dog and not slip off during frying. At this point you can insert a stick in each hotdog, to add the carnival flare. But I did not have any so I skipped it.
Heat oil in a pan to deep fry. Take the floured hotdog and dip it into the batter and fry immediately. I did one at a time only because I had a small pan and they fry quick, in about 2 mins and trying to manage more, I would have burn them. Also I did one test one and tweaked the salt as needed.
I had made them in advance just in case they were a bust and I needed Plan B to feed my kids. But 10 mins in the oven at 350 degrees took care of that.
Would I make them again? Probably not, don't get me wrong they tasted great, but there's something about walking through the state fair and getting that foot long corn dog.
