Severed finger cookie

Halloween is a big deal over here and with each year I get more and more excited about the decorating, baking ghoulish treats and getting costumes. This year my kids were a pirate, the lizard from Spider-Man and Lightening McQueen. And they had a ball trick a treating and each came home with tones of candy. They each got some candy to keep, some candy I kept aside for my gingerbread house and the rest I give it all away. And by that I mean I had a piñata for my sons birthday (which is the next day, Nov 1st) and put all the candy in it!  He might just have a piñata for all his birthdays!
I don't let my kids have all that candy at once, not just because of the sugar but because each candy is allowed to have trace amount of  bugs, metals such as lead and  artificial ingredients such as flavoring, coloring and preservatives. So you eat one and your system could try and rid your body off its toxicity but can you imagine 10-20 pieces. That's way too much toxicity than I'm ok with.
But kids are kids and I think you have to let them have some fun in moderation.

When I saw these in an email from cake central, they had Halloween written all over them. It is a post from IOIDA for Halloween finger cookies and when I was at Target, I saw a severed finger ice mold which is prefect to shape each cookie.

Ingredients:

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup confectionery sugar
1-2 tsp vanilla
2  3/4 cup flour
1 egg room temperature
1 tsp baking powder
Strawberry jam
Almond slices.

Beat the butter and then add the sugar and beat till light in color. Add the egg and vanilla and then the flour and baking powder.
Chill the dough for 30 mins to an hour so that it is easier to work with. If you have a mold, pinch off some of the dough and press it into the mold. I put the mold in the freezer for a couple of mins so it was easier to pop each finger. Make slits on either side of the knuckle.
Bake in a preheated oven at 325 degrees for 20-25 mins. As they cool, smear a tiny amount of strawberry jam on the nail of the finger and attach an almond slice.

What I learnt from this: they taste better than they look!
